A quick lesson in not being a dick

- Don’t blame men, blame misogynists
- Don’t blame white people, blame racists
- Don’t blame Muslims, blame terrorists
- Don’t blame Christians, blame homophobes
okay sure but remember this: these tidy little aphorisms exist within a social framework that universally favours white Christian men and arranging it like this makes it seem like each of those points carries equal weight of meaning; making an explicit parallel between oppressed groups and groups that include their oppressors seems fallacious to me
a woman, especially a woman of colour (to say nothing of trans people), will face all sorts of structural violence in her life—systemic racism and misogyny, in ways subtle and overt—and it is reasonable to feel anger when you have the entire system stacked against you
moreover a woman or trans person declaring that they hate men does essentially nothing to alter the position of men
misogyny and racism (and that includes the implication that terrorists are Muslim until proven otherwise) are systemic and inescapable, particularly by those most affected by them; you cannot simply set the racists or the misogynists off to one side and say “don’t be like these jerks” because that shit gets internalized, even by people it victimizes
oppression is a fundamental mechanism of capitalist social structures and you can’t really set it aside or apart
the best you can do is actively resist it and resist engaging with it in your own life
for the record, I write this as a straight, white, Western cisman, so I am fortunate enough not to be directly subject to much of anything w/r/t structural violence; as such I feel slightly uncomfortable preaching about issues that affect other people vastly more than me
if I’ve said anything that you take issue with, please call me on it
