I’ve seen such a wide variety of projects in various states of development on Kickstarter. It’s definitely a valid avenue for funding a photo project. Ultimately your promotion of the project will decide how much you raise. Go for it!
I guess I should talk to some people who have used Kickstarter and see if I can figure out how best to get word out and whatnot.

The cost of not going through Kickstarter it is zero possible funding outside of your own efforts anyhow. No matter what, it’s worth a shot.
