The actions of Paul Watson and the person behind that fucking seal meat petition are part of a continuum of paternalistic racism, a form of eco-chauvinism that demonizes indigenous people’s lifeways and traditions. These actions do nothing to address the structural iniquities modern animal husbandry, nor do they do address wholesale ecological destruction.

FFS what else are these heathens going to eat. Is no animal safe on the this fuckin god damn awful planet. Humans are freaks and the most dangerous animal on earth.

Angela L. United Kingdom

(an actual quote from the petition page)

I don’t make the claim lightly, either. The popular perception of indigeneity is based on decussated colonial essentialisms that are fundamentally racist in character, in this case the savage and bloodthirsty hunter.

Further, the animal rights movement has devoted reams of rhetorical space to lurid portrayals of indigenous seal hunting practices, describing them as uniquely violent. Seals are not endangered, and Northern hunters, indigenous or settler, are not pitiless monsters. Such portrayals have more in common with colonialist narratives of indigenous primitivity than they do with reality.

Finally, in consideration of the place FNMI people occupy within the national narrative, and the structural racism we face, it’s really interesting that animal rights activists so frequently target us. We have never hunted anything to extinction, or the brink of extinction. We are not responsible for the grotesque practices in industrial scale animal husbandry. We have never been responsible for wholesale ecological destruction.

Feeding families, communities, and earning a couple of bucks on the side in the -total- absence of regular paying work are not pernicious threats to the ecosystem, just as a small Native-owned restaurant selling meat from a family business on a tiny island in the Atlantic aren’t threats. FNMIs are an easy target, represent a vulnerable and disadvantaged social class, and are frequently the targets of racism based on ethnocentrism and historical determinism.

So yeah. Racist.
