Someone is attacking women from behind in the Whyte Avenue area, from 75th Street to 117th Street, as far out as 64th Ave, from 10pm to 4:30am. They only have vague descriptions of the guy so far — “between five-foot-four and six-feet tall, and about 150 pounds, with a slim build. He was wearing blue jeans and might be wearing a white, black or grey hoodie” — because it’s dark and they all happened in poorly lit areas, which is most of those neighbourhoods considering all the trees and whatnot.
At least they’re not victim blaming, which has happened with EPS before.
“It’s a heinous crime. None of these women are doing anything wrong. They should be able to walk home alone but unfortunately there are people out there who do these things and we’d like to catch them,” Det. Rob Chan, with the southeast division criminal investigation unit, said Tuesday.
THANK YOU. (though it is completely ridiculous that I have to praise a police department for not victim blaming, because what the hell even is that.)
On the other hand, it makes me absolutely livid that I just had to ask my boyfriend to come meet me if it’s after dark and I’m walking to his place, because there are trees and alleys and I won’t feel safe otherwise.
Livid that these attacks are being labelled by police as “opportunistic”, because yeah, it’s dark and women are alone — god forbid a woman would ever want to walk alone, in her own neighbourhood, after grocery shopping or the bar or whatever — and this motherfucker knows he can get away with it.
Livid that they’re getting more violent, and who knows how much worse they’ll get or how many more will occur until they catch this asshole (or he gets bored, but do these fuckers ever get bored?)
Livid that some people will probably think this isn’t a huge deal, and blame the victims for walking alone and therefore asking it.
Livid that I even have to think about taking precautions.
Just. Fuck everything, sometimes.
Be safe, friends.

say what you will about Edmonton, it has some vital, vibrant street art
Some say that privatization in this province has gone too far, well, we at the Rhinoceros Party of Alberta say that it hasn’t gone too far enough! Look at how successful it has been with privatized power generation! We will privatize everything, from the sidewalks and roads to your children’s education. We will also privatize your children. Even the legislature, long a potent symbol of government, will be privatized and covered with ads.
So this eye sore is on the side of an exit on one of my city’s bridges (the Quesnel bridge).
People are calling it art.
art
Um excuse me but what the fuck is wrong with this city? Do you know how many homeless and starving people are in this city? Do you have any idea how bad our roads are after all this winter?
and Edmonton decides to spend $600,000 of public money of this silver hunk of shit. And people are calling it “art”
I think I’ve mentioned this before, but I fucking hate this city.
Funding for arts and homelessness are not mutually exclusive. Just three days ago the City of Edmonton dedicated $360,000 for an initiative to help the homeless. This is just part of the city’s homeless initiative that has provided housing for 1,500 people in the last three years.
But hey, I get it. Homelessness is a complex social issue with no easy solutions. Art is subjective and it’s simple to criticize something that’s highly visible and feel like you’ve taken some sort of principled stand.
Did you know this installation is part of the city’s 1% for arts program, that dedicates a per cent of the cost of all public infrastructure in Edmonton to arts? Let that sink in for a moment. The sculpture cost $600,000 and that’s one per cent of what it cost to build more car lanes on the Whitemud so people don’t have to wait as long in traffic.
Let’s also not forget to mention the hundreds of millions of dollars of risk city council has decided taxpayers should carry for the benefit of a private enterprise.
You want to talk priorities?
I fucking hate false moral indignation.
